Brief Introduction
The Department of Economics, Statistics, Monitoring, and Evaluation (DESM&E) was established in the year 1979 with the objective of providing the Government with the socio-economic data of the state. Since its inception, it has continued to function as the statistical wing of the Department of Planning, Economics, Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation (DESM&E) was earlier known as Directorate of Economics and Statistics and later on it converted into a department during the present government tenure thereby assigning it with monitoring and Evaluation works of all the state government departments.Our Head Office is based at church road, Gangtok and presently the Head of the Department is Shri S.D. Schemes/Program of the Department
Basically, the Department works on the National Sample Survey (NSS) on matching sample basis with its Central counterpart. At present, 66th Round is underway. The Price Collection from the selected urban and rural markets is one of the crucial activities based on which indices of Consumer Price Index are being published at regular intervals. Price Collection of Building Materials within the selected bazaars both inside and outside the state is being undertaken. The computation, estimation and evaluation of the gross Gross State Domestic Product both at Current Prices and Constant Prices and Per Capita Income covering all the 13 sectors of the economy are undertaken. Inline with the rest of the Country, our Department took up the Economic Census for the state in 1998 for which report was generated and submitted to the Central Government. Likewise in 2005, the 5th Economic Census was undertaken with the rest of the other states. The Department undertook a mammoth task of doing Socio-Economic Census, the first of its kind in India during 2005-2006. Through this Census, detailed households level of Socio-Economic Data of the State and photograph of all the Citizens of the state was collected. This Census has set a benchmark for all Census activities in the country and has made Sikkim a pioneer in this field. The Department has also published a number of Statistical Profiles and Reports.
